Mario Martone represents the perfect trait d’union between the tradition of the great masters of Italian cinema and an updated reflection on modernity, on the contradictions and on the deep roots of Italian culture.
From Rossellini he inherits the “ethics of vision”, for which each shot is motivated from a moral point of view, from Pasolini he follows the political and anthropological analysis of modern man, wandering and doubtful, with the tragic and melodramatic Visconti he dialogues above all with the strength of his cinematic and operatic staging.
From the immense Neapolitan culture
Martone starts from the immense Neapolitan culture, but he does not remain imprisoned there, since he transcends: in time, when he investigates the origins of our homeland, and in space, when he broadens the horizon to bourgeois Rome, to the papal Recanati, to the “intrusive Savoy “. Martone stated: “My artistic career is uneven, and this often upsets the critics or creates disturbances.”
By conferring the Fiesole Award to the 2021 Masters of Cinema, we are delighted that Martone is upsetting and upsetting all our prejudices, our false certainties about cinema, art and man.
